A fun, flavour-filled and festive menu, perfect for a sunny South African summer.
The team from Krazy Kiwi Kookbox have put together a wonderful festive menu to celebrate the summer holidays. This selection offers a delightful mix of fresh and vibrant flavours for a celebration under the South African sun – and believe us here at Child Mag when we say the entire festive menu is scrumptious, but the watermelon and feta salad, bursting with flavour, is a definite MUST, and the grilled prawn and pineapple skewers are so moreish!

Festive menu
starter: watermelon and feta salad
Ingredients:
- Fresh watermelon (cubed)
- Feta cheese (crumbled)
- Fresh mint leaves
- Red onion (thinly sliced)
- Lime juice
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine watermelon cubes, crumbled feta, and fresh mint leaves.
- Add thinly sliced red onion.
- Drizzle with lime juice and olive oil.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Toss gently and serve chilled.
main course: grilled prawn and pineapple skewers
Ingredients:
- Fresh prawns (peeled and deveined)
- Pineapple chunks
- Red bell pepper (cut into squares)
- Red onion (cut into squares)
- Marinade: olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, paprika, salt, and pepper
Instructions:
- Prepare the marinade by mixing olive oil, crushed garlic, lemon juice, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Marinate the prawns for at least 30 minutes.
- Thread prawns, pineapple chunks, red bell pepper and red onion onto skewers.
- Grill over medium-high heat until prawns are cooked and slightly charred.
- Serve with a fresh garden salad.
side dish: mango and avocado salsa
Ingredients:
- Fresh mango (diced)
- Avocado (diced)
- Red onion (finely chopped)
- Red bell pepper (diced)
- Fresh coriander (chopped)
- Lime juice
- Salt and pepper
Instructions:
- In a bowl, combine diced mango, avocado, red onion, and red bell pepper.
- Add chopped fresh coriander.
- Drizzle with lime juice.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Mix gently and serve chilled.
dessert: rooibos and honey poached pears
Ingredients:
- Pears (peeled and halved)
- Rooibos tea bags
- Honey
- Vanilla pod
- Cinnamon stick
- Water
Instructions:
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add rooibos tea bags, honey, vanilla pod, and cinnamon stick.
- Reduce to a simmer and add peeled and halved pears.
- Simmer for 20-25 minutes until pears are tender.
- Remove pears and let the liquid reduce to a syrupy consistency.
- Serve poached pears drizzled with the rooibos and honey syrup.
beverage: sparkling berry lemonade
Ingredients:
- Fresh mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- Lemon juice
- Sparkling water
- Mint leaves
- Ice cubes
Instructions:
- In a glass jug, muddle a handful of mixed berries with fresh mint leaves.
- Add lemon juice and a bit of sweetener if desired.
- Fill the jug with ice cubes.
- Top up with sparkling water.
- Stir gently and serve immediately.
snack: biltong and cheese platter
ingredients:
- Assorted biltong slices
- Variety of cheeses (cheddar, gouda, brie)
- Fresh fruits (grapes, figs)
- Nuts (almonds, walnuts)
- Crackers
instructions:
- Arrange biltong slices, cheeses, fresh fruits, and nuts on a large platter.
- Serve with a selection of crackers.
