Is your family considering a lifestyle change to commit to sustainable eating? It can be tricky knowing whether a product will be good for your family’s health, and the environment. This new food label will help make sustainable eating easier.
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) is a new food label that allows you to choose meat, milk and egg products that have been farmed with real sustainability credentials.
Tozie Zokufa, Executive Director of A Greener World (AGW), says: “An AGW certification guarantees that animals have been raised outdoors on pasture or range. This has known benefits for our health and the environment. You can be confident that animals have received no added hormones or subtherapeutic antibiotics that could negatively affect your health. Our certification standards promote and guarantee responsible and sustainable farming practices that are better for the environment.”
Look out for Certified Grassfed by AGW, Certified Non-GMO by AGW, Certified Organic by AGW and Certified Regenerative by AGW.
Glen Oakes Farm in the Hemel en Aarde Valley and Boschendal in Franschhoek are among the 10 farms signed up for certification. Langside Meats from Queenstown and Eddie’s Eggs in Sunday’s River in the Eastern Cape are also included.
A US consumer report has acknowledged Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW as being the only “highly meaningful” food label for farm animal welfare. AGW’s programmes are transparent and independent. Their standards, policies and procedures are available online.
AGW hopes to get more South African consumers, farmers and retailers who believe in what AGW offers onboard. “We are appealing to South African companies to invest in this trustworthy certification.”
Support the movement
Individuals can also donate to A Greener World to support this work. All funds received go towards promoting the programme to consumers and retailers and getting more farmers onboard.
