Healthy nutrition for the 'Child Athlete'

With so many children participating in sports, parents often find themselves wondering how to feed their young athletes. CHILD Magazine recently caught up with Johannesburg-based sport dietitian and paediatric nutritionist, Dr. Tamryn Martin, who sheds some light on the subject.

So what's the difference between an 'active child' and a 'child athlete'? Dr. Martin says it all depends on the age bracket. "If your child is between the ages of 5 and 8, parents should encourage playing and enjoying physical activity. All children should be 'active' at this age and sport shouldn't be a source of stress."

But, says Martin, as they become older, the competition becomes more intense (the 'child athlete'). "There's more commitment to practice and competitions last longer. If your child's eating habits are poor, it will reflect in their performance on the field."
