Big Harleys, big hearts

I visited the annual Red Cross Children’s Hospital Harley Davidson Christmas Party for the Oncology Ward on 25 November 2011. Each year, around 50 burly Harley Davidson bikers visit the hospital to give children – and a few eager adults – a short spin on the back of their noisy, gleaming machines. The event was extremely well-organised. The bikers came roaring into the car park just after 2pm while a throng of children, supervised by their parents or hospital staff, waited for their turn to ride. I only spotted one child who changed her young mind at the last moment; everyone else sported a broad grin, or a very determined gaze, while holding onto a biker. Children too sick to come outside were treated to a Harley visit in their wards – the bikes were wheeled in and they got a chance to sit on a bike or just have a close look at one. I missed this part, but I’m sure it was very moving.

After the bike ride, all the children lined up to receive a gift from Father Christmas, a goodie bag and a healthy snack. There were even more smiles during this part of the event.

All over the world, it’s the festive season, which signals a time of generous giving to those less fortunate. Witnessing this “big bikers with big hearts” day at the hospital reminded me that it doesn’t take a lot to cheer up someone’s life. All we need to do is share something we love doing, or are good at, with others. The bikers did their bit, and so did all the volunteers who made the day possible and special.
